Ipswich-based artist Andy Harwood draws on his background in design to create mathematically derived compositions that interrogate the mechanics of vision.
In this exhibition, Harwood investigates the concept of 'hypervigilant light'—an illumination that functions not as a passive aesthetic element, but as an active, psychological force. Through a meticulous construction of formal elements, Harwood evokes a state of heightened somatic alertness.
Sharp, precise geometric configurations and hard edges direct the eye outward to the periphery, mimicking the frantic, scanning instinct of a nervous system on high alert. Conversely, this ocular paranoia is mediated by seamless tonal gradients that recede from light to shadow, pulling the gaze inward towards central stabilizing visual anchors.
Hypervigilant Light is an Ipswich Art Gallery exhibition.
