The journey to adulthood is full of joy, sometimes darkness and many unexpected turns. At 27 years, Gustav Mahler set out to create a symphony that contained "the whole world" and so began his hero's quest. Hear this groundbreaking Symphony No 1, Titan, interpreted by Australia's finest young orchestral musicians aged 15 to 24 – under the baton of Acclaimed New Zealand conductor Tianyi Lu - as they embark on their own paths. This powerful work is paired with Mary Finsterer's Lake Ice, an Australian work conceived as a musical quest for double bass and orchestra featuring AYO alumna and beloved Queensland talent, Phoebe Russell. This concerto expands the expressive possibilities of the orchestra, just as Mahler expanded the possibilities of the symphony more than a century earlier.
