Jan Murphy Gallery is excited to present Water and Stone by Marina Strocchi.
"In 2025, I returned to Italy for the first time in nearly twenty years. My family comes from Ravenna in Emilia–Romagna, and my father and grandparents are from the small village of Granarolo Faentino. While I was there, a local historian traced my family back to the 1700s—and that was only at first glance.
The history of the canals of La Pianura (the lowlands) tells a story of adaptation that began in the Middle Ages—a story of communities shaping their environment in response to water, trade, and knowledge. In this body of work, I trace those rhythms of place: the flow of water, the passage of people, and the enduring sense of connection between land, architecture, and memory. "– Marina Strocchi, 2025
In 1992, Strocchi moved to Central Australia, where she helped found the Ikuntji Art Centre and worked closely with an iconic generation of Aboriginal artists. In 2021, Strocchi returned to Melbourne and now lives and works in the Yarra Valley. Strocchi's paintings are included in major public and private collections including the National Gallery of Victoria and Artbank. She is a many time finalist in significant prizes including the Wynne Prize, the Alice Prize, the Fisher's Ghost Art Award, and the National Works on Paper Award.
