Forlorn romance novelist Joan Wilder often daydreams about partaking in the romantic adventures her characters find themselves in. When her sister is kidnapped and held for ransom for a treasure map in Colombia, she is seizes the opportunity to make that dream a reality, throwing herself into a wild journey through the South American wilderness with Jack T Cotton, a soldier of fortune who reluctantly agrees to take her to her sister's captors.

Together, they brave the perilous journey facing off against many foes desperate to claim the mysterious giant green emerald waiting for them on the other side of the treasure map.

Robert Zemeckis crafts an epic adventure romance straight out of a penny dreadful with a cast for the ages, including Danny DeVito, Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas.
