Lincoln Austin - LA WAS HERE

25 MARCH - 11 APRIL 2026

Jan Murphy Gallery

Jan Murphy Gallery is pleased to present, LA WAS HERE, a series of new sculptural works by Lincoln Austin.

"LA WAS HERE, a series of sculptural works exploring the material, symbolic and transmissive potential of written language employing the 'English' code, filtered through the playful aesthetic of a Queer Artist.

The words I have chosen to explore in these new works are considered, but not complicated; some elegant, some direct, others ambiguous, and some puerile toilet door humour. The use of homonyms, anadrome or semordnilap, and palindromes, further complicating the reading and increasing potential misinterpretation of the intended message, these artworks functioning as both a communication channel and noise/disruption within the channel. - Lincoln Austin, 2026

Currently based in Adelaide, Lincoln Austin has been exhibiting his work since 1996. In 2021, a 20-year survey exhibition, Lincoln Austin: The Space Between Us, was curated for Ipswich Art Gallery by Samantha Littley. Austin has produced a number of large-scale public projects and has been awarded two prizes for Art and Architecture by the Australian Institute of Architects. Austin's works are held in many public and private collections, including Artbank, QAGOMA, HOTA, Ipswich Art Gallery, Caloundra Regional Gallery, Griffith University Art Museum, UQ Art Museum, QUT Art Museum and Museum of Brisbane.
