Domesticidad by Monique Baqués

18 SEPTEMBER - 7 OCTOBER 2026

Creative Room Art Space

Domesticidad is a solo exhibition by Brisbane-based artist Monique Baqués, presented at Creative Room Art Space in West End.

The exhibition explores the idea of home as something shaped by memory, care, belonging, responsibility and displacement. Across painting, collage, drawing, embroidery and mixed media, Baqués returns repeatedly to the image of the house and its relationship with the female body.

In these works, domestic space is never entirely stable. Houses tilt, float, close in, protect or seem to merge with the figures that inhabit them. Everyday materials associated with the home are also transformed, taking on new meanings around repair, restraint, vulnerability and self-preservation.

Baqués' own experience of living across six countries and four continents informs the work, giving Domesticidad a strong sense of movement and impermanence. Rather than presenting home as a fixed place, the exhibition considers it as something continually made and remade through relationships, routines, objects and memory.

Domesticidad invites visitors to reflect on the emotional and physical structures we create around ourselves, and on the ways those structures can shape identity, belonging and our sense of safety.
