Meanjin alternative folk artist Sofia Cirino writes passionate and poetic anthems about the most confusing and beautiful parts of life. Writing autobiographically about all aspects of growing up and gaining a sense of self, their ethereal melodies and personal arrangements are made to be felt. They strive for a unique ambiguity in their lyricism, toeing the line between maintaining lyrical specificity, whilst allowing for audience interpretation, creating a unique connection between them and their listeners.
Sofias most recent single 'every time', released in November 2023, was originally written as a queer love song. The lyrics express a vulnerability in love only felt at the start of a new relationship. The song takes a melancholic turn through the swelling production into the bridge, revealing the resistance between partners struggling to realise the flaws weighing down their relationship. As the song comes to a bittersweet end, the lyrics turn back on themselves, expressing loss of hope and a final, reluctant apology.
