Charlie McCarthy is a Hobart-based violinist, educator, and author of the Postclassical Violin book series, which encourages classical players to embrace improvisation and creativity in their practice. A specialist in Gypsy Jazz and improvisatory performance, he is known for blending technical mastery with an adventurous spirit, creating music that is both deeply rooted in tradition and strikingly fresh.
Since 2012 Charlie has been a regular performer at the OzManouche festival, appearing with groups including Belleville, the Jane Morris Quartet, Django’s Tiger, and the Harry Edwards Trio. His recent Triple Fiddle Fiesta brought together three improvising violinists in a dazzling exchange of energy and style. Whether leading Django’s Tiger in tribute to Reinhardt and Grappelli, collaborating with fellow artists, or teaching the next generation, Charlie is dedicated to exploring the violin as an instrument of expression, dialogue, and possibility.
