The romance of the era when the rails sang with the sound of vintage trains awaits you in Ipswich, courtesy of the Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway. Hop on board an immaculate vintage wooden carriage or vintage Dining Cars and discover the rich mining history of the Ipswich area as you go past ruins of old mines and equipment from days gone by.
Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway operates on various weekend services each month and is available for charter.
The Swanbank Collier is a 1 hour 10 minute trip from the scenic Swanbank station set in idyllic lakeside grounds. While at this 1903 heritage railway station, gifts can be bought, and an extension trip on heritage buses dating from the 1940s grow your day out. Bring your own picnic or barbecue, purchase a snack from the resident food van, and enjoy walking tracks overlooking the lake.
The Queensland Pioneer Dinner Trains offer a range of themed dining experiences in the Heritage Award Winning Sunlander dining cars from the iconic Sunlander.
There are Themed Trains such as the Santa Steam Train and Troop Trains that re-enact the war years in Australia.
Swanbank Collier
Join us for a journey back in time behind one of our two 1960s heritage diesel locomotives on our COVID Safe rail service - "The Swanbank Collier ” departing from Swanbank Station (ONLY) at 9am, 11am and 1pm. Total round trip time is approximately 70 minutes.
This train trip featuring heritage timber carriages is a one hour journey that winds its way back in towards suburbia through the old coal mining sites, lush bushland and along the base of Castle Hill.
There is a quick turn around of the locomotive at the Racecourse and we trundle back to Swanbank, through paddocks of horses and past quaint miners cottages.
QPSR are operating these services using a Queensland Tourism and Accommodation Industry COVID Safe Plan to limit the risk of COVID spread.
Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway ask that all passengers complete the pre-trip form (which will be emailed out to you a day prior to the trip) prior to arrival and respect the limitations imposed.

Twilight Santa Steam Train
All aboard for a magical twilight steam train ride this December! Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway (QPSR) is running a special set of Christmas services behind a restored 113-year-old locomotive, departing 3pm, 5pm & 7pm from Swanbank Station to Bundamba Racecourse.
The heritage bus, a food van and nightly entertainment will be on site from 2pm each day. Seats are limited to book today!
