Where to find the jacarandas in Brisbane

When spring arrives in Brisbane, the city transforms into a sea of purple as jacaranda trees burst into bloom. From mid-October through early November, Brisbane’s parks, streets, and campuses are cloaked in a spectacular lavender haze, making it the perfect time for a relaxed, city escape. Make your plans now because it’s only a matter of time before the blooms fall, and you fall in love with Brisbane.

New Farm Park, New Farm

New Farm Park is a local favourite for picnics under the jacaranda trees. The fallen purple petals, carpet the grass and blanket the historic rotunda and stunning rose garden. Join the families that lounge on the grass, play lawn games and enjoy a picnic in the park. You’ll find the Brisbane River just below offering another beautiful view and free to use barbeques. Visit on a Saturday morning to find the Jan Power Farmers Markets for fresh pastries, coffee and produce to enjoy as you marvel at the trees.

Wilson Outlook Reserve, New Farm

Just a short walk uphill from New Farm Park, Wilson Outlook Reserve offers panoramic views of the Story Bridge and Brisbane City with jacaranda trees in the foreground. It’s one of the best photo spots in the city during bloom season and especially at sunset, when the soft purple petals are bathed in golden light. A favourite spot for photographers and romantics alike. A short elevator trip down from the outlook will find you at Howard Smith Wharves, the perfect spot for lunch, dinner or drinks right on the Brisbane River. Find Italian eats at Ciao Papi, Cantonese fusion at Stanley, modern Japanese at Yoko, Greca Restaurant with Greek inspired plates and incredible drinks at Mr Percival’s, Fiume Rooftop Bar and Felons Brewing Co..

Victoria Park, Herston

Once a golf course, now a sprawling parkland in glow-up mode, Victoria Park has big open skies, a sprinkling of jacarandas that light up the space in lavender tones. Its elevated views over the city skyline can be caught by those hitting balls at the driving range or dining at the Victoria Park Bistro.

University of Queensland, St Lucia

The University of Queensland has a legend that if a jacaranda bloom falls on you before your exam, you’re doomed. Good thing you're just here to admire. The Great Court is surrounded by sandstone cloisters and archways saturated with jacaranda shade, making it a peaceful place to be, despite the exams the local students are undertaking.

Orleigh Park, West End

Nestled by the Brisbane River, Orleigh Park in West End is a peaceful riverside stretch where towering jacarandas line the riverbank, offering shade and serenity with fewer crowds. This riverside walkway is perfect for a morning stroll or cycle under falling petals, with the occasional kayak drifting past. Visit on a Saturday to enjoy the West End Markets, or head to one of the popular local cafes, Morning After. and Picnic Cafe, or the aptly named, Jacaranda Coffee Lane.

Taylor Bridge Reserve, Chelmer

For those wanting to venture a little further out, Chelmer’s Taylor Bridge Reserve offers an idyllic riverside escape. This lesser-known spot is particularly popular with locals, and the jacarandas here offer a peaceful, whimsical backdrop. Bring a book or some lunch and enjoy the dappled purple shade away from the crowds. Take the opportunity to explore a lesser touched suburb in Brisbane, with riverside walking paths, hidden parks and quaint cafes to explore.

Coronation Drive, Toowong

If you're coming into Brisbane by car or bus, you'll likely catch your first glimpse of jacaranda season along Coronation Drive. The stretch near Toowong is flanked by mature trees that create an incredible purple corridor. While it's a busy arterial road, there are several riverside pathways nearby where you can stop and admire the view more leisurely. Whether you’re walking alongside the street or driving through the purple cove, pull into the Regatta Hotel for a riverside tipple.
