Two days in South Bank

Uncover South Bank’s vibrant cultural centre, refreshing swimming spots, delicious cafes and renowned restaurants and perfect Brisbane River backdrop in just two days. Find time to explore, eat, drink and unwind in the beautiful heart of Brisbane, in South Bank.

Day one

Morning

Once you arrive, check your luggage into one of South Bank’s convenient accommodation offerings. With your bags settled, take some time to explore your surroundings. Stroll through the vibrant Arbour Walkway, along the Brisbane River on the Clem Jones Promenade and through the Rainforest Walk to discover some of the big attractions of South Bank as well as the hidden gems that you can plan to come back to.

 

Afternoon

Once you've gotten your bearings, make your way to South Bank’s vibrant cultural centre, home to the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA), Queensland Museum, State Library Queensland and Queensland Arts and Performing Centre (QPAC). Spend your afternoon exploring the museums and galleries, taking in the permanent and rotating exhibitions that showcase some of the most meaningful and beautiful art in Brisbane.  Don’t miss a visit to the State Library which is found in in-between the two museums where you can dive into Queensland’s deep cultural heritage through its extensive collections and inspiring spaces.

Evening

Before discovering the live art Brisbane has to offer, enjoy a delicious dinner at South Bank. Grey Street and Little Stanley Street are filled with a wide range of different eateries that feature food from all around the world. Find steak and wine from Argentina at Calida, Spanish tapas and paellas at Ole and flavour filled tacos at Poca Madre. Take your tastebuds to Italy when you dine at Firma Italian or sale across the Mediterranean Sea to get a taste of Lebanese food from Baba Ganouj. Or if you prefer Asian cuisine, Ma Pa Me serves authentic Southeast Asian plates and Tai Tai offers authentic Chinese dining. Once you are satisfied, make your way to enjoy an evening of live art by means of a musical, dance or orchestral showcase at QPAC.

Day two

Morning

You’ll find that Brisbane locals love an early start, so why not join them to make the most of the day in the city? Whether you’re an early riser, or prefer a slow holiday sleep-in, there are plenty of spots to grab a smooth coffee and breakfast too so you can fuel you for the big day ahead. Find Coffee at the Kombi found by the riverside, treat yourself to a gluten-free donut at Nodo Donuts South Bank, or head to C’est du Bakery for a flaky pastry, or swing by delicious coffee spot, Crypto Coffee that is open 24hours every day.

Once you're fuelled for the day, take leisurely stroll through the streets of South Bank to find the sightseeing spectacles and hidden gems. Start at the colourful Brisbane Sign, a popular selfie spot for kids and adults alike. By the entrance of the Neville Bonner Bridge is the Wheel of Brisbane, a must-ride activity in South Bank, offering spectacular views of Brisbane city and the Brisbane River. Then find the culturally rich heritage-listed treasure, the Nepalese Peace Propaganda nestled among the gardens. Finish your walk by wondering down to find Brisbane’s one-of-a-kind inner-city beach, perfect for a cool dip or soaking up the sunshine.

Afternoon

Right in the heart of the South Bank precinct is Street’s Beach, Brisbane’s iconic man-made beach – a sandy palm-fringed beach with sparkling blue water and views across the Brisbane River and city skyline. Families can also splash about in the Aquativity pool  and for those looking to unwind and something calmer, head to the nearby  Boat Pool..

After a refreshing dip or relaxing by the water, satisfy your appetite at one of South Bank’s pubs or bars nearby. South Bank Beer Garden and Southbeach and The Plough Inn are all found directly behind the iconic Streets Beach pools. Barbossa Bar, Bourbon Street and Tipplers Tap are also great pubs to swing by post-swim.

Evening

For your last night in South Bank, celebrate by enjoying an indulgent riverside dinner and drinks. For a refined dining experience, and located right on the riverside is Italian ristorante, Otto, where local ingredients are showcased through a modern Italian menu. Hearty Italian food can also be found at Popolo, where Italian authenticity comes with a twist. Alongside Popolo is River Quay Fish a fresh seafood restaurant with spectacular riverfront views, and The Jetty South Bank who highlights the quality of Australian produce. Brisbane River views can also be found from above, dine at Lina Rooftop to see the Brisbane River and beyond whilst enjoying a European inspired menu.
