Ascot & Hamilton:
Things to do

18 JANUARY 2023

The neighbouring suburbs of Ascot and Hamilton are a story of old meets new. Ascot is steeped in heritage with old grand homes, large blocks with city views and Brisbane’s historic racing club. Meanwhile, trendy Hamilton is booming with new apartment towers that fringe the Brisbane River. Beneath them, restaurants, shops and amenities have the area pumping with things to do. Catch the CityCat up to Brett’s Wharf and set about on foot to enjoy the two precincts of Portside Wharf, Hamilton, and Racecourse Rd, Ascot.

01. Take a culinary trip around the world

Eat Street Northshore riverside street food market is a feast in every sense – the sights, smells, tastes and sounds come to life in this container food village every Friday – Sunday. Take the family on a culinary choose-your-own adventure and experience Brisbane’s best bites in one location.

02. Attend a race meet

Did you know that the first race meet at Eagle Farm Racecourse was in 1865? Throwing back to its historic roots are the beautiful entrance gates and old train departure times still displayed on the wall beside a bell. On race days, don your best frock and head along to Eagle Farm or nearby Doomben racecourse. Be sure to keep an eye on Brisbane Racing Club’s events calendar which includes the Winter Racing Carnival, Spring Racing Carnival, plus country music days, girls’ days and more.

03. Drink all the local coffee

Brisbane institution Cafe 63 started with its first location on Racecourse Road, so it's only suitable to visit them while in the area. If French pastries and espressos are more your thing, Le Bon Choix bakery will have you salivating, and for some of Brisbane’s best plant-based brunch and epic coffee, Dicki’s has fast become a local fave.

04. Eat Brisbane’s best ramen

Perhaps even Australia’s best – it depends on who you talk to. Taro’s Ramen is a former Brisbane Times Good Food Guide winner for ‘Best Cheap Eats’ and one bowl will show you why. Taro himself is dedicated to the art of ramen, from the broth to the handmade noodles to the free-range eggs.

05. Catch a flick at Dendy Portside

Home to five state-of-the-art digital cinemas, Dendy Portside is the place to catch both the latest blockbusters and independent arthouse flicks. Even better, the cinema is licensed so you can purchase drinks at the bar to enjoy alongside your hand-dipped choc-top.

06. Dine out at Portside Wharf

Make a day of it with lunch or dinner after the flick at one of Portside Wharf’s bustling restaurants. Gusto da Gianni is great for classic Italian, Byblos serves lip-smacking Lebanese with a to-die-for river view, Bamboo Basket is famous for authentic Chinese cuisine, and fine dining mainstay Sono is perfect for intimate dates or important business lunches. For one of Brisbane’s best butter chickens, check out Aamaya Indian Restaurant, and there’s plenty of grab-and-go options too.

07.Celebrate in Racecourse Road

With a slick fit-out, premier location on Racecourse Rd and a gourmet menu that also has functions packages, it’s no surprise that Victory Lane is a a place to celebrate. Grab a bottle of champagne or a couple of cocktails and relax in Victory Lane’s leafy al fresco bar, where sundowners come with a healthy serve of people-watching and live music. Flaming & Co is the perfect place for that special night out with its open woodfire grill and delectable menu making for a memorable dine-in experience.

08. Indulge in Brisbane’s best steaks

Towards the city fringe of Ascot, the Breakfast Creek Hotel is a Brisbane institution. The historic pub proudly pours Queensland’s classic XXXX ale and serves a large selection of premium steaks. It was built in 1889 in French renaissance style by former Lord Mayor, William McNaughton Galloway, who over-indulged on one occasion and fell drunk from a second-floor window and died. Legend has it that his ghost is still seen in the original parts.

09. Captain your own boat on the Brisbane River

Adjacent to the Breakfast Creek Hotel, a boating adventure awaits with GoBoat electric picnic boat hire. Be your own captain, gather your crew and set sail on the Brisbane River, where you can cruise by Newstead, Teneriffe and New Farm. Each boat fits up to eight and no boat license is required. You can bring your pet, too!

10. Enjoy Sunday sundowners with friends

Byblos Bar and Restaurant is the place to be on Sunday afternoon for great cocktails, live music and good vibes. Watch the sunset from its riverside location and be sure to order some Lebanese tapas to ward off hungry stomachs.
