North Stradbroke Island/ Minjerribah in a day

4 MAY 2023

Escaping to the crystal clear waters of North Stradbroke Island/Minjerribah has never been easier! Simply jump on a passenger ferry or water taxi and explore the island on foot or on the bus, or make a sunny island weekend out of it.

Here’s a suggested itinerary for your next day trip to paradise:

Get on Island Time

Your morning commute never looked so good! Catch a ferry from Cleveland to North Stradbroke Island/Minjerribah, then bus up to Point Lookout.

Mid-morning snack

Grab a bite to eat from the bakery or fish and chip shop at the Point Lookout café strip, or pre-pack a picnic lunch to take with you. There are a number of tables and grassy areas around Point Lookout to take in the stunning view out to sea while you have lunch.

It’s not an island visit without ice-cream! Indulge in homemade Italian ice creams and sorbets at Oceanic Gelati Bar.

Take a stroll

Immerse yourself in nature and spot local wildlife by walking along the North Gorge Headland, where you’ll spot kangaroos, and turtles, manta rays and whales (from June to November) just off the coast. Head to Amity Point to spot dolphins at the jetty and koalas at the camping ground.

Watch out for whales

After the gorge walk, head towards Cylinder Beach. On the way, look for the bushwalks that trail off the main road. The Whale Trail is a peaceful and shaded walk that takes you out of the sun and has raised platforms and vantage points to spot whales. The walk is 950m and ends at Deadman’s Beach.

Take a dip

Keep following the beaches until you reach picture-perfect Cylinder Beach. The waves at this patrolled surf beach are usually quite calm, making it an ideal place for a swim. There are also barbecue and playground facilities here.

Take a tour

For a North Stradbroke Island/ Minjerribah tour with a difference, sign up for a full day experience with River to Bay or Yura Tours, where you’ll learn about the island’s rich indigenous culture, history, diverse wildlife, and breathtaking coastal scenery.

Learn to surf

Want to hit the waves, but don’t know how? North Stradbroke Island Surf School can get you out there providing everything you need to know to ride your first wave. Keep an eye out for dolphins while you’re in their playground!

Lunch

After your lesson, marvel at the blue and green colours of the ocean from afar at the Stradbroke Hotel - with an ice-cold beverage in hand, of course. Or, if you’re still up for a challenge, enjoy lunch at the North Stradbroke Island Golf Club restaurant, Bistro Seymour, before testing your skills on the 9-hole green.

Afternoon

Say cheers to the sunset at Straddie Brewing Co. in Dunwich (located near the barge), with local island brews and a rooftop view. Or from noon on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, the Point Lookout Surf Lifesaving club opens its doors for the best sunset tipple we know of.
