Best beaches for swimming & surfing

Cylinder Beach

Cylinder Beach is one of the most popular beaches on the island, with more family-friendly conditions than most of the other beaches. It’s patrolled 365 days a year by the North Stradbroke Island/Minjerribah Lifeguards and volunteer surf lifesavers from Point Lookout Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) on summer weekends. It’s usually protected from the predominantly south-easterly winds, with crystal-clear water, clean white sand, and a nice gentle wave – great for learn-to-surfers, body surfers and body boarders.

For those looking to learn how to surf, North Stradbroke Island Surf School offer both group and private surf lessons and are often held at Cylinder Beach.

Main Beach

Main Beach, protected by the large headland that is home to the North Gorge Walk, features larger waves - perfect for experienced swimmers and surfers. For sweeping views of the beach, surrounding coastline and scenery, make your way to the nearby headland where you can see kilometres of beach from a higher vantage point. Just a short walk away is Point Lookout, the locals favourite spot to stop and enjoy Whale Tail Gelati with an unbeatable view. Keep an eye out for local marine life here, including dolphins, turtles, and manta rays passing by, as well as migrating humpback whales in season from June - October.

Frenchman’s Beach

On the other side of the North Gorge Walk, you will find Frenchman’s Beach, the somewhat tricky access point is an indication that this beach is not for everyone to swim and surf in. The big waves and rip-dominated waters reveal that only experienced surfers should dare to challenge the surf.

Little-known island secrets

Myora Springs/Moongalba

Just a few kilometres out of town is a beautifully kept secret, home to diverse wildlife and vegetation, not to mention the freshwater spring itself. Take a slow walk around the area, reading the informative signage and taking in nature and the history behind the area.

Brown Lake/Bummiera

Naturally infused by the tea-tree trees bordering the edges, Brown Lake received its name from the rich, tea-coloured water. This serene spot is a popular swimming hole, offering picnic tables, woodfired barbeques and other amenities so you can spend the day relaxing by the lake.
